Fall Decor ideas (that aren’t pumpkins)
Currently here in the Southern Hemisphere, spring is around the corner. The trees are in bloom, people are sipping their coffee in outdoor cafes, and everyone is anxiously waiting until we can finally put our coats away. But back home in the US, I know everyone is gearing up for football, scarves and yes, fall decor. Every year around this time you know exactly what to expect: wreaths made of yellow and orange leaves, plaid, maybe some bats or skeletons, something that says “hello fall,” and of course, pumpkins. And it’s not that I particularly dislike any of these things, but it can get a little tired and a little boring. So how can we elevate our fall decor? How can bring those colors and that cozy sense of warmth into our space while still welcoming the new season?
Tones and Shades
Fall colors in nature come in such a range that we can draw from that when thinking about furniture and decor. There are mustard yellows, sage greens, chocolate browns, rust, terracotta, cocoa, amber, the list goes on! QUICK COLOR LESSON: tone means the true color if you added grey to it and shade means the true color if you added black to it.
Here’s an example of true green (left) and when we add grey it becomes a green tone (right).
Try some of these tonal decor items to bring that fall feeling indoors:

Textures
Fall is all about feeling cozy and creating that sense of coziness around us. In decorating, coziness comes primarily from textures, whether it’s leather, fur, wool, boucle, or silk. Layering lots of textures is the key to making a room feel lived in and approachable.
Dried Florals
Branches, dried leaves, grasses, stems and palms are some of my go-to decor items any time of year. But especially during fall, these are great to fill your vases, use as centerpieces, or hang on your door instead of fake plastic orange leaves. Adding in natural or organic elements to your decor also creates a sense of calm in a room and adds interest when styling.
Black
Black is always in season. But if you’re not a lover of color, then adding some back (especially matte black) into your room is an awesome way to make it feel a little more seasonal - or spooky. Whatever you’re into. Look for adding black in things like candle holders, in your table settings, bowls, vases, decorative boxes, candles and frames.
Happy fall decorating!
