Designing an all white room
Color trends come and go every year, but white is timeless. That’s why all white rooms - kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, or bedrooms - are a classic look that you can be sure you’ll still love a few years down the road. Have you ever seen an all white room you didn’t love?? They’re fresh, chic, modern and cozy all at the same time. But in order to create that effortlessly beautiful white room, there’s a few elements working hard in the background.
TEXTURE
Adding in lots of texture is the key to making any room feel comfortable and inviting, but especially in all white spaces, texture is what adds interest. Whether it’s brick wall treatment, marble countertops, wooden beams, fur rugs, cotton drapes, or a boucle chair (because you know I can't resist a boucle chair) , be sure to layer in different textures so the room has depth.
LAYER tones
To create that elegant look you see on Pinterest or in magazines, make sure to mismatch your white tones. Matching every single shade of white is not only impossible to do, but the room will end up falling flat. So choose lots of different whites and creams in your textiles and paint colors and layer them in so that it looks purposeful.
ADD WARMTH
We don’t want a white room to feel sterile and cold, so we have to find ways to warm it up without adding warm colors. One way to think about this is bringing the outdoors in. This means adding things like plants, stone, woven baskets, wooden bowls or small wooden pieces of furniture - like a stool. If you have the budget, this could also mean adding skylights or large windows to let in natural light and views of the outdoors - almost like art.
ART
Speaking of art… If you love the all white look but decide you want a pop of color, an all-white room is the perfect way to let your art shine! Imagine an art gallery: the walls are always plain white because it helps the art stand out and shine on its own. So don’t be afraid to add in something fun and show your personality.
DON'T BE SCARED
Even if you have pets or little kids, don’t be afraid of a white room! There are SO many great performance fabric options these days and even if you do get a stain on the bed or sofa or walls, white is great because you can bleach it. And remember, rooms aren’t meant to look pristine all the time, they are meant to be lived in and loved and sometimes a little wear and tear (or stain) adds that patina you’ve been trying to achieve all along.
