How to create a dreamy primary bedroom
The average person will sleep for 229,961 hours in their lifetime or basically one third of our lives! Add that to the amount of time we spend getting ready, reading, scrolling on our phones etc. and that equals a LOT of time spent in the bedroom. So making it a beautiful and cozy sanctuary is crucial. We want a space that feels warm and inviting at night before we go to sleep but makes us feel confident and ready to take on the day when we wake up. How do we achieve all that in one room? Here’s a look at how we made it happen in the primary bedroom of the She Sanctuary Project.
Start with the bed. The bed should be the focal point of every bedroom. Decide what size you want and what kind of style: low profile, midmod upholstered with wood accents? White boucle with a curved headboard? Or maybe something bold like tufted green velvet? The options are endless. For this space, we went with the Lana Upholstered Bed from West Elm.
PS. By choosing the Peak package you get access to trade discounts, including 20% off at West Elm!
Once you pick a style, next comes positioning. If it isn’t immediately obvious what wall the bed should go on, consider these design rules:
The bed should never be placed under a window, it’s drafty and blocks light
It should never be pushed up against a wall unless absolutely necessary, otherwise it makes it hard to make the bed
Next, in this room, we added lots of texture. Cozy sheets from Parachute Home, a pink velvet end of bed bench and pillows of different sizes and textures.
For window treatments, consider first if you need privacy or blackout curtains to block light. For this bedroom, we didn’t need either so we went with a white sheer crosshatch curtains from West Elm, again to add a layer of softness.
Next up is lighting. Lighting is so important in a bedroom and is they key to creating ambiance at night aka the time when we are in the bedroom the most. So consider adding layers of lighting - floor lamps, table lamps on the nightstands, and overhead lighting. This can be a beautiful statement chandelier like the glass drum chandelier we chose or a fan.
In order to achieve scale and proportion, make sure you choose nightstands that fit the space. If you have a smaller room, consider square or round (hint: you can even shop for side tables!). But if you have a larger room like this one, make sure you shop for nightstands or bacheor’s chests that will properly fill the space.
To narrow down your search, the height of the nightstand should equal or be close to the height of the bed. Imagine reaching over for a sip of water in the middle of the night - you don’t want the glass to be too high or too low.
Finish the room with decor that speaks to your personal style but isn’t too much that the space feels cluttered. We chose this framed piece of art from Minted and a tasseled rug with a curved pattern to help tie it all together. PS. Even if your bedroom is carpeted, you can still add a rug to anchor the bed.
